So, it is moving day and you want this move done and over with so you can get on with life in your new place. You need it to be fast, but without compromising your cherished items. So what can you do to be as prepared as possible? What can you do while the movers are doing their job? What else do you need to think of so you can be sure you have everything?
In and Out Movers - Packing
If the crew is packing your belongings, be sure you have plenty of packing supplies, or make sure you have arranged for them to bring enough materials to pack all of your stuff.
Be prepared by knowing where all of your difficult to move items are. If the movers know what they are packing ahead of time, they will be better able to pack your stuff more efficiently and safely.
Make it easy for the movers to blanket wrap your furniture. Pull furniture away from walls so that one person can work in front of the item, and one in the back. If you had difficulty moving an item in, alert the moving crew beforehand so they can plan how to move difficult pieces without scratching them.
Moving Your Stuff Out
Make sure you keep all pathways clear so movers have a safe and easy to navigate path. This includes inside and outside. If you have a back entrance where items can be brought to the truck faster, notify the crew. It will save you time and money!
If you have packed items into boxes yourself, make sure they are not overfilled and the boxes are not flimsy. Movers often carry multiple boxes at once. If a box is not stable in their hands, it could cause them to accidentally drop your items. Make sure to mark boxes as fragile and what types of material are inside (such as glass). Be sure all items inside are properly wrapped and stored. Another good tip is to inventory the contents of each box. Not only will this help you identify which boxes belong where in the new home, but it will help you remember what you have packed and what you have not.
Packing the truck may require more planning than you thought. It is easiest if items that belong together (such as boxes for the living room) are packed together. This way, when you get to your new place, it becomes much easier to place boxes into the rooms they belong in.
While the movers are there
Moving is tough on children. It can be a nervous or exciting time for a child to change residence, and you can bet they need to be taken into account. Most of the items they use to occupy their time will be packed. Make sure to keep a few easily transportable playthings with you, unpacked. While the movers are doing their job, be sure to keep them occupied in other rooms of the house or with a relative, friend or neighbor.
Once the crew is almost done loading, have a look through the place to make sure there are no items left behind or overlooked. Make sure anything moved or unhinged to make for a bigger pathway are replaced or hinged correctly. Run through your checklist to make sure there are no missing items. After this you are ready to move into your new residence!
