Organization is the key for a smooth move and this is the time to start working on the details of your move. Check with your movers to ensure your move is scheduled for the correct date and time. Give yourself enough time for your movers to change their schedule in the event of a problematic booking.
Moving In Illinois - Planning early
Determine what you plan to bring with you and what you would like to be rid of. Gather all of the things you do not wish to transport and have a yard sale, or donate to charity. If you plan to donate, call your charity at least 2 weeks ahead of time to allow for a pick up before your move date. If you plan to have a yard sale, plan for a date about 2 weeks before the move. Get your neighbors involved and have a block sale. The less you transport, the lower your cost. You can advertise your Chicago area garage sale on Craigslist here: http://chicago.craigslist.org/gms/
If you plan to do all or some of your own packing, be sure to purchase your moving supplies. You can buy boxes from storage unit rentals or a moving supply company. Although you may be tempted to get your boxes from the local grocery store or big box retailer, they are often flimsy and will not protect your belongings the way boxes from a moving company will. Be sure to buy thick or re-enforced boxes.
Planning doesn't stop at packing
Get familiar with your new community. The local Chamber of Commerce and municipal government web sites have a lot of information on schools, community programs, parks and recreation facilities. A list of Illinois Chambers of Commerce can be found here: http://www.2chambers.com/illinois3.htm
Create a layout diagram of your new place. Use it as a map to plan where items will go once you are all set up. You will relieve yourself of the stress of deciding where to place your belongings while the movers unload.
A great deal of moving expenses is tax deductible. Keep track of all receipts in a folder or envelope. Obtain all important government forms including an IRS Change of Address form, Form 8822. One may be obtained by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS web site at www.irs.gov web site. You will be able to download and print form 8822 and Form 3903 to help deduct moving expenses.
Finalize all real estate transactions required. Transfer all of your insurances (home, life and auto). Call your insurance carrier to update them on your new location and be sure to update your address with doctors and pharmacies.
All medical records and important documents, such as wills, stock certificates, and other one of a kind items (jewelry, coin collection, photos etc.) with you. Place the items in one easily identifiable and easy to locate folder.
Notify schools in the old and new location and arrange for the transfer of school records and begin the process of registering in new schools.
Change of Address can be performed on line ahead of time. Go to http://mychangeaddress.com/ to enter in your address change.
